デザインケータイの最終型
2010 年4 月のミラノサローネは、アイスランドの火山噴火による火山灰の影響でヨーロッパの各空港が閉鎖されパニックに陥りました。帰国できなくなってしまった人々同士で、飛行機のフライト状況などさまざまな情報をシェアするために大いに役立ったのはTwitterでした。現地でのコミュニケーションにG9は大いに役立ったものの、SNS 時代に相応しいUI の必要性を実感しました。そこでG9 の後継機G11 の企画にあたっては、SNS 利用時のユーザービリティ向上を目的にタッチセンサーを採用することにしました。ケータイはガラケーと揶揄されるようになり、街中にはiPhone 4を手にした若い女性たちの姿が増えていました。2010 年11月にはauからAndroidスマートフォンIS03が発売。スマホ時代到来の只中でG11 の開発は進められました。G11が発売されたのは2011 年3 月25日、東日本大震災発生から2 週間後のことでした。実質的に最後のデザインケータイとなったG11。ラストを飾るにふさわしい高い完成度を誇るモデルです。
The Final Form of the Design Phone
The Milan Design Week in April 2010 was thrown into chaos when volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland forced airports across Europe to close. For those unable to return home, Twitter proved invaluable as a way to share flight updates and other information.
While G9 served us well for communication during our time in Milan, the experience made us keenly aware of the need for a user interface better suited to the emerging age of social media. When planning G11, the successor to G9, we therefore decided to incorporate a touch sensor to improve usability when accessing social networking services.
By then, conventional Japanese mobile phones were increasingly being derided as “Galapagos phones” (garakei), while more and more young women could be seen around the city carrying iPhone 4s. In November 2010, au launched the IS03, an Android smartphone. Development of G11 proceeded amid this rapid transition into the smartphone era.
G11 was released on March 25, 2011, just two weeks after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In effect, G11 was the last of the design phones. With its exceptional level of refinement and completeness, it was a model worthy of bringing the era to a close.
