    The Final Form of the Design Phone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Milan Design Week in April 2010<\/strong> was thrown into chaos when volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland forced airports across Europe to close. For those unable to return home, Twitter<\/strong> proved invaluable as a way to share flight updates and other information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While G9<\/strong> served us well for communication during our time in Milan, the experience made us keenly aware of the need for a user interface better suited to the emerging age of social media. When planning G11<\/strong>, the successor to G9, we therefore decided to incorporate a touch sensor to improve usability when accessing social networking services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By then, conventional Japanese mobile phones were increasingly being derided as \u201cGalapagos phones\u201d (garakei)<\/strong>, while more and more young women could be seen around the city carrying iPhone 4s<\/strong>. In November 2010, au launched the IS03<\/strong>, an Android smartphone. Development of G11 proceeded amid this rapid transition into the smartphone era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    G11<\/strong> was released on March 25, 2011<\/strong>, just two weeks after the Great East Japan Earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In effect, G11 was the last of the design phones<\/strong>. With its exceptional level of refinement and completeness, it was a model worthy of bringing the era to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
