Policy and Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In September 2007, a report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications\u2019 Mobile Business Study Group<\/strong>set out a policy calling for the introduction of a business model that clearly separated mobile service charges from handset prices. As a result, the actual price of handsets began to be displayed at retail stores, and the so-called \u201c\u00a51 phones\u201d<\/strong> and \u201c\u00a50 phones\u201d<\/strong> gradually disappeared from the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, iida<\/strong> conceived a line of basic models that combined three qualities: simple functionality, affordability, and sophisticated design. The first of these was misora<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design was created by Yoshitaka Mukae<\/strong>, then at Kom&Co.Design<\/strong>, led by Yoshihiro Komuta<\/strong>, who had been involved with the au Design project<\/strong> since its earliest days. The name misora<\/strong> is a coined word combining the Japanese words for \u201cwater\u201d (mizu)<\/strong> and \u201csky\u201d (sora)<\/strong>, reflecting the phone\u2019s clear, pure design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around the same time that misora<\/strong> was released, the iPhone 3GS<\/strong> went on sale in Japan through SoftBank<\/strong>, marking an era when a growing number of early adopters began carrying two devices\u2014a conventional mobile phone and an iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
